Postgraduate, diploma.

Description:
The Postgraduate Diploma in Physics is designed to meet the needs of science or engineering graduates who wish to upgrade their
qualifications in physics and its applications. It comprises honours and Part II-level courses and incorporates a three or six point research project. Considerable flexibility of content is provided to suit individual needs.

The programme may be studied internally on a full- or part-time basis and completed in the equivalent of one year of full-time study. A total of 24 points of coursework and project as prescribed below must be completed.

Students without the appropriate background must complete the
necessary prerequisite courses in addition to the 24 points
prescribed.

Total - 24 points
At least 12 points, including a research project, must be taken at the 400-level.

400-level courses - at least 6 points
M430 Advanced Quantum Theory
M432 Advanced Electromagnetism
M433 Advanced Solid State Physics

Research Topic in Physics (M434) - 3 or 6 points
To be taken in the final semester and chosen in consultation with the Programme Chair and subject to approval by the Programme Committee.
300-level courses - maximum of 12 points
M312 Solid and Surface Physics
M317 Statistical Mechanics
M314 Nuclear and Particle Physics
M320 Astrophysics
M321 Electromagnetism
M318 Laboratory Computing
M377 Applied Fourier Analysis

200-level courses - maximum of 6 points
Chosen in consultation with the Programme Chair and subject to
approval by the Programme Committee.

Because of the flexibility of the structure applicants are advised to consult with the Programme Chair in selecting the combination of courses which best meets their needs.
